Rodarte's Spanish Manifesto

During Hispanic Heritage Month, Spanish-language fluency is burning an indelible path through my mind. Spanish — that beautiful romantic language that has eluded me much of my life. This op ed focuses on a subjective experience shared by millions of other professional Latinos in the United States. It’s also a subject that makes me want to throw darts during this important cultural month. And just so you understand the core of my opinion, I’ve felt this way a long time. It’s also a declaration that has to bust out into the open.

From day to day, it’s so easy to run with every moment and forget how privileged I am and how different life would be if I had been born even 20 years earlier. As a Mexican-Iranian-American living in the United States in the 21st century, it’s really easy to forget about what my ancestors experienced and how it has impacted the life I live today.

Mi Gente Remembers Michael Jackson

MJ Dead! MJ Dead! This was the text I received June 25 around 6:30 p.m. on my cell phone from my cousin Mika Blanco, as I attended an event in Bay City. I told a friend “I just got a text that Michael Jackson has died and I don’t know if it’s true,” but it was! The King of Pop went into cardiac arrest and was dead at the age of 50.

Cultivating Hispanic Leaders - The Great Lakes Bay Regional Hispanic Leadership Institute
In the past five decades Latino leaders in the Saginaw community have made their mark for different organizations and programs to help our greater community. Yet, in more recent years concern over the apathy among Latino youth has propelled the creation of the Great Lakes Bay Regional Hispanic Leadership Institute.
